Dan Wolpe's Weekly Theater Blog

Often I wonder if I will ever write anything so profoundly emotionally honest that it will be remembered after I am gone.  I consider myself to be a very good writer, but I am VERY well aware that I am nowhere near a great writer. When I see the works (or read the works) of great playwrights like Shakespeare, John Patrick Shanley, Eugene O'Neil, or  Tennessee Williams , I wonder if I will ever be able to reach that part of my soul and guts to write such plays.

One of my teachers at NYU taught us that the reason the word is "playwright" as oppose to "playwrites" is because plays are wrought from our souls, not written by our pens. Great writers are in touch with the deepest part of themselves, both the light and darkness within. Will I ever be able to honestly reach that deeply inside me? I don't know.  I do know I will never stop trying!
