Jewish Theater's Deep Dark Secret

Jewish theater has a deep, dark secret. It is one that is known to theater afficianodos. Ironically, it is also a secret that those who know it wish to reveal.  In fact, we have been trying to reveal it for decades to people who have chosen not to listen.  Here it is:

There is more to Jewish theater than "Fiddler On The Roof" and Yiddish theater.

There.  I said it out loud (I know you are reading it, but I promise that I DID say it out loud). There are hundreds and hundreds of passionate, brilliant, moving pieces of theater that are in English and fit under the umbrella of "Jewish Theater." There is even an Association for Jewish Theater that promotes the production of quality shows that deal with Jewish issues.

Many of you may already know this, but perhaps you'd be surprised as to how many people do not know this.  Over the last few years, I have done several scholars-in-residence and lunch and learn programs on Jewish theater, and in every single case, most people thought I was going to speak about Yiddish theater. There was no concept of Modern Jewish Theater outside, of course, "Fiddler On The Roof."

As the new year dawns, let all of us who care about Jewish theater expose the secret.  Let us make sure that everyone knows that Jewish theater is a thriving, exciting field, and that there is so much for all of us to enjoy and experience.
